Identity cards for minors – please note before applying Both a standard identity card or an identity card for a minor can be issued to an applicant who is a minor. These are two separate products, and only the standard identity card can be used as a travel document. The guardians' consent must be obtained to issue an identity card, whereas an identity card for a minor can also be applied for without the guardians' consent.

An identity card as a travel document

An identity card can also be used as a travel document instead of a passport. Please note that a so-called identity card for a minor issued without the guardians' consent, an identity card issued to a foreigner or a temporary identity card are not valid as travel documents.

An identity card can be used as a travel document replacing the passport in the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Estonia
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg

  • Netherlands

  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • San Marino
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom.

    In the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland) no travel documents are required; however, you must be able to reliably prove your identity when requested to do so.

    PLEASE NOTE: If an identity card reported as missing or stolen is found, it can only be used as a travel document after the card holder has presented the card to the police and reported it as found.
