Medical certificate for a driving licence
In most cases, a medical certificate or a young person’s health certificate must be attached to a driving licence permit application.
1. Young person’s health certificate
- The young person’s health certificate may not be older than five years
- A young person’s health certificate is not accepted for a Group 2 driving licence permit application, for which a medical certificate for a driving licence must be submitted.
2. Medical certificate for a driving licence
- The medical certificate may not be older than six months
- The fulfilment of health requirements should be indicated separately on the medical certificate for Group 1 and Group 2.
3. Comprehensive medical report (aged drivers)
- When the applicant for a driving licence permit is an aged person, particular consideration must be given to the impacts of ageing on health and driving and the fulfilment of health requirements. A medical certificate of this type is called a comprehensive medical report.
- A comprehensive medical report may not be older than six months
- A comprehensive medical report must be attached to the application once the applicant exceeds a certain age limit.
4. Specialist medical report
- In certain circumstances, the police may request that the applicant submit a specialist medical report.
Medical report when submitting a new driving licence permit application:
A medical report must always be attached to the driving licence permit application if:
- The applicant is applying for his or her first driving licence permit
- The applicant does not already have a valid driving licence belonging to the category referred to in the application
- The police may request that the applicant also attach a medical certificate to the application in other cases
- A comprehensive medical report is required if:
- An applicant for a Group 1 driving licence permit is aged 70 or over at the time of submitting the application
- An applicant for a Group 2 driving licence permit is aged 68 or over at the time of submitting the application
Generally, there is no need to attach a medical certificate to the application, if:
- The applicant already has a valid driving licence in the group referred to in the application
- The applicant is applying for a duplicate of the driving licence because of his or her name has changed or the licence has been lost
- The applicant has passed the driving test for the category the application refers to in the Defence Forces while doing his or her military service no more than two years previously
If you are unsure about whether or not you should attach a medical certificate to your application, contact your local police to check.
