Training licence for a motorcycle

The right to ride a motorcycle as a learner without the presence of an instructor for the purposes of obtaining a motorcycle licence is granted by the police. The training licence can be granted for a maximum of three months and certain conditions or restrictions may be imposed. By law, a new licence may not be granted without a substantial reason. The training licence must be paid for when submitting the application.

A motorcycle that fulfils the requirements of the relevant driving licence category must be used for the training. The details of the motorcycle will be entered on the training licence.

A training licence may be granted if:

  • the applicant has a valid driving licence permit
  • the applicant has participated in driving instruction for four hours, of which at least two hours have been practical on-road riding
  • the applicant has passed the theory test
  • the applicant has passed the motorcycle handling test.
  • no driving bans have been imposed on the applicant in the five years preceding the date of the licence decision

The following must be submitted when applying for a training licence:

  • a certificate of basic traffic and vehicle control skills
  • consent of parents/guardians if the applicant is under 18.
